Virtual Prototyping

Optimal shading systems control direct sunlight, window heat gains, and glare while maintaining daylight and access to outdoor views. Use of shading is routine in buildings but a lack of accurate modeling tools has limited innovation. With recent advances in our ability to model optically complex fenestration systems, we now have the ability to quickly and more accurately evaluate annual performance. LBNL’s GenOpt can be paired with Radiance and EnergyPlus to computationally find optimal CFS designs. This modeling capability can significantly reduce the cost of early-stage R&D, enabling simultaneous prototype development and assessment of energy-savings potential and comfort impacts for informed business decision making.
