Work with Us

Partnering with industry ensures that research and development work conducted at the Lab has a clear path to market. Typically, R&D conducted at LBNL is designed to act as a catalyst and mediator between the building industry supply and user business transaction by (a) helping component suppliers to create and optimize cost-effective, integrated systems that work, and (b) demonstrating and verifying to owners, designers, and specifiers that emerging technologies reliably deliver on energy-efficiency claims.

Partnering mechanisms have included the following:

  1. Evaluation of emerging and commercially available technologies is conducted in order to provide third party data to end users or to prove out the validity of a conceptual approach to achieving energy efficiency goals.
  2. Collaborative research activities are defined between a manufacturer and LBNL scientists in order to accelerate development and commercialization of innovative technologies. Public agencies such as the U.S. Department of Energy and the California Energy Commission may jointly sponsor projects under a Collaborative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). Costs, personnel, facilities, equipment, or research capabilities may be shared. Additional information
  3. A manufacturer opts to license an LBNL technology and collaborates with scientists to commercialize the technology. Technologies for which invention disclosures and/or patent applications have been submitted are listed here.
