Automated Solar Control

Automated Solar Control

Operable shading devices are more advantageous than static systems since they can be adjusted according to real-time HVAC and lighting demands and to outdoor weather conditions. To increase energy efficiency, automated controls operate shades when needed; raising them when sources of discomfort are no longer present to increase daylighting and access to view, or lowering them when window heat gains, glare, or sunlight need to be controlled. LBNL staff collaborate with industry to develop, evaluate, and improve the sensors and control systems that adjust motorized shading, switchable windows, and operable windows.
